Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)

EPSRC are the main UK government agency for funding research and training in engineering and the physical sciences, investing more than £850 million a year. EPSRC support research into engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, materials science, information and communications technologies.

EPSRC manage their portfolio through programmes. Research based programmes focus on investigator-led research and training. Business innovation programmes deliver priority research themes and maximise the economic and social impact of the research and training we fund. This support includes the EPSRC Centres for Innovative Manufacturing (who work with the automotive sector amongst others).

Engineering Council (EC)

The Engineering Council is the UK regulatory body for the engineering profession. EC holds the national registers of 235,000 Chartered Engineers (CEng), Incorporated Engineers (IEng), Engineering Technicians (EngTech) and Information and Communications Technology Technicians (ICTTech).

In addition, the EC sets and maintains the internationally recognised standards of professional competence and ethics that govern the award and retention of these titles. This ensures that employers, government and wider society - both in the UK and overseas - can have confidence in the knowledge, experience and commitment of registrants.

Export Credit Guarantee Department (ECGD)

ECGD is the UK's official Export Credit Agency and its aim is to help UK exporters of capital equipment and project-related goods and services win business and complete overseas contracts with confidence.


ECGD provides:
• Insurance to UK exporters against non-payment by their overseas buyers;
• Guarantees for bank loans to facilitate the provision of finance to buyers of goods and services from UK companies;
• Political risk insurance to UK investors in overseas markets.


ECGD works closely with exporters, project sponsors, banks and buyers to put together the right package for each contract. ECGD has over 90 years of experience in new and developing markets across the world and this can be used to advantage to achieve the best proposal in unfamiliar environments.

Institute of Acoustics (IOA)

IOA was formed in 1974 as the UK’s professional body for engineers working in acoustics, noise and vibration. IOA is licensed by the Engineering Council to award Chartered and Incorporated Engineer status to suitably qualified applicants.

Institution of Diesel and Gas Turbine Engineers (IDGTE)

IDGTE aims to be the leading independent professional body for engineers with specific interests in diesel engines, gas turbines, and alternative technologies. IDGTE offers a range of services including visits, papers, seminars, training courses, gas turbine conference, diesel technology conference, networking opportunities, an annual luncheon in London which attracts many from the industry, a quarterly journal ‘The Power Engineer’, and an annual ‘Operation Report’ with feedback from various users worldwide. IDGTE can trace its history back to 1913.
