Knowledge Transfer Networks (KTN)
About Knowledge Transfer Networks....
KTN's are initiative of the Technology Strategy Board, a non-departmental public body whose vision is to enable wealth creation in the UK by making it a world leader in innovation where technology is applied rapidly, effectively and sustainably.
Aerospace & Defence KTN

The Aerospace & Defence KTN is funded by the Technology Strategy Board with the aim of creating a single overarching network across business, Government and academia to foster collaborative research and development. It is the custodian of the National Aerospace Technology Strategy (NATS) and works with Government, Industry, Regional and Academic representatives to drive it forwards. The neutrality and inclusivity of the KTN enables it to impartially facilitate the research and technology validation requirements outlined by the Strategy.
The NATS Technology Roadmaps are a concise embodiment of the Strategy, demonstrating the integration of the innovation process from the global business opportunities, through the UK product strengths and hence technology requirements, and pulling through leading-edge research from the knowledge base.
NATS currently comprises of over 80 programmes, representing some £480m of co-investment from the UK Government and Industry. NATS is completely aligned with Government policy and strategies for Science and Innovation, Defence Technology, High-Value Manufacturing and Low Carbon Industry.
Electronics KTN

The Electronics KTN is pulling together the network of the UK's capabilities across the electronics value chain, from research through to design and product development, and including sales and operations creating a community rich with potential collaborative partners. The work of the KTN can be broadly divided into three main activities:
The Capability Directory - a fully searchable listing of UK electronics companies to promote knowledge transfer and networking.
Regional KTN activities - delivered by organisations aligned with the Regional Development Authorities or Devolved Authorities.
National Program - a set of national themes and conferences covering emerging technologies, areas of excellence and good business practice relating to the electronics industry. Our goal is to support the electronic design community across the UK, driving innovation to maintain our excellence for innovative electronic design.
Materials KTN
The Materials Knowledge Transfer Network, funded by the Technology Strategy Board, brings together the materials supply chain to improve industrial innovation and global competitiveness of UK business. This KTN covers a wide range of materials, such as polymers, advanced composites, ceramics, technical textiles, natural materials and metals. It also covers materials-related technologies, such as powder processing, surface engineering and smart materials and structures. The Materials KTN has wide coverage of product design, sustainable materials for transport applications and for packaging. Current membership across the KTN is about 9000 individuals from 5000 organisations. Over 1000 of its members are product designers. Over 900 of its members are from international companies.
Micro & Nanotechnology KTN

The Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN) is here to encourage and support organisations to collaborate and share knowledge with key partners in attractive end user markets to achieve growth of the UK nanotechnology sector.
Within the UK, there has in recent years been significant investment into both infrastructure and R&D, through the Government’s Micro and Nano Manufacturing initiative, with £150m joint investment split approximately 50:50 in micro (including microfluidics and micro electro mechanical systems) and nanoscale development.
The UK has an excellent knowledge base through coordinated activity across the research councils using thematic investment to address challenges, and is taking a global lead in health, safety and the environment, standards and measurement issues.
Sensors KTN
The Sensors & Instrumentation KTN is a network covering the whole of the UK’s sensing community, from academics and large industries to small businesses, research councils and government departments.
The Sensors & Instrumentation KTN embraces sensing in its entirety – from the principles of measurement and novel sensor technologies to instrumentation, deployment and data analysis. It works with industry and researchers to:-
Support the sensing supply chainHelp small companies exploit sensing
Connect academics to industry
Drive sensing innovation
