National Semiconductors

National Semiconductors has been making silicon chips at its Greenock plant for over 35 years.

Over that time, it has invested $250 million, most recently starting in June 2008 a programme to convert its production line to handle larger silicon wafers (200mm rather than 150mm) and extend its technical capabilities.  The Greenock plant needs to be competitive not only against other companies but also against facilities operated by National Semiconductors in other countries.

The key to success of the Greenock plant has been its strong engineering skills base and its ability to innovate constantly and respond to change.   By focusing on manufacturing high value analogue products, where mastery of design is critical and where the creativity and innovation of its engineers gives it an edge, and by continually investing in world-class skills and equipment, the Greenock plant has remained competitive on a world scale.
